UAE Family Visa Documents Required

A tourist visa can bring a relative for a visit. It does not make them a resident, and the papers for a visit are not the papers for residence. The UAE family visa documents required are the identity, relationship, health, and housing papers that support a dependent residence file. This page is the document list. It is not the full eligibility test and it is not a holiday checklist.

Which documents does almost every family file need?

The sponsor’s passport and residence visa, the dependent’s passport, and photographs come first. The relationship has to be proved with an attested certificate: a marriage certificate for a spouse, a birth certificate for a child. If those certificates were issued outside the UAE, they usually need legalization in the home country and attestation for use here, plus a certified translation if they are not already in Arabic or English.

Medical fitness at an approved center is required for applicants who fall into the age group the authority tests. Emirates ID registration follows approval. A tenancy contract, or other proof of where the family will live, is often asked for so the address is real.

What is specific to a spouse?

The marriage certificate is the core document. It must show a marriage the UAE recognizes, and the names must match the passports. If the certificate is foreign, attestation is the step people skip and then lose weeks on. Divorce or death certificates matter if there was a previous marriage and the authority asks for the chain of status.

Photos, the spouse’s passport, medical clearance when required, and the sponsor’s residence papers complete the usual set. A visit visa the spouse already holds does not replace any of this.

What is specific to a child?

The birth certificate must name the parents and match passport spellings. For a child born outside the UAE, attestation and translation follow the same logic as a marriage certificate. If the parents are divorced, or if only one parent is in the UAE, custody or consent papers are often required so the sponsor has the legal right to include the child.

School enrollment is sometimes requested for school-age children. It shows the child will actually live here. It is not a substitute for the birth certificate. A newborn inside the UAE follows a birth-registration path first. That certificate is a different document from a foreign birth certificate that is being attested.

What is specific to a parent?

Parent sponsorship is narrower than spouse or child sponsorship. The relationship is proved with the sponsor’s birth certificate, attested if it was issued abroad. Parents often need medical clearance, passport copies, photographs, and evidence of where they will live. Some files also ask for papers showing there is no alternative carer in the home country. Treat that as a case-by-case request from the authority, not as a guarantee that parents can be sponsored.

Dependent Relationship paper Watch-outs
Spouse Attested marriage certificate Names must match passports; prior marriage may need closing papers
Child Attested birth certificate Custody or consent if one parent is absent
Parent Sponsor’s attested birth certificate Category is narrower and decided case by case

Do Dubai and Abu Dhabi ask for the same stack?

The federal idea is the same: prove identity, relationship, fitness, and a place to live. The desk that receives the file is not the same. Dubai files go through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs. Abu Dhabi uses its own residency channel. A document accepted in one emirate can still be queried in another if the attestation chain or the translation is off.

Ask the authority that will actually issue the visa which extra page it wants. Do not build the file from a checklist written for a different emirate and hope.

What changes at renewal?

Renewal is not a brand-new relationship proof if nothing has changed, but passports, medical fitness, Emirates ID, and the tenancy or address evidence are commonly refreshed. If the marriage, custody, or the sponsor’s own visa has changed, the file needs the new paper before you ask for a new stamp.

Start before the dependent visa expires. A renewal is not a visit extension, and a tourist stamp cannot bridge a gap you left too late.

How should foreign documents be prepared?

Get the certificate attested in the country that issued it, then complete the UAE-side attestation the authority expects. Translate with a translator that channel accepts. Upload clear color scans, and carry originals to any in-person step. The usual failures are a cropped edge, a translation of a translation, or a certificate that was notarized but never attested.

  • Spellings identical to the passport, including middle names.
  • Attestation completed before you book medicals if the authority wants the legalized certificate first.
  • One file per person. Do not mix a spouse’s scans into a child’s upload.
  • A visit itinerary is not a residence document. If you only need dates for a holiday, use the Visa Days Calculator UAE.

How should you assemble the folder so it survives a check?

Make one folder per person. Put the passport bio page first, then the photograph file, then the relationship certificate, then attestation pages in the order they were issued, then translation, then medical and insurance if you already have them. Name the files with the person’s passport name, not with “scan1”. Officers and typing centers lose time on unlabeled uploads, and lost time is how a dependent’s visa lapses while a spouse’s file is still open.

Check the photo against the current specification: recent, plain background, no glasses if the rule says so, and the face size they publish. A photo that worked for another country is a common reject. Check every stamp on the certificate is visible, including the page edges. If a name was transliterated two different ways, obtain a correction or a sworn explanation before you upload. Do not hope the officer will guess that “Mohammed” and “Muhammad” are the same child.

Where is the current total?

Document rules and totals change on different schedules. This page does not quote a total. Check the current total on the visa processing page when you are ready to file.
