With your flight already booked, you finally sit down to apply for your UAE tourist visa and quickly realize the process isn’t as straightforward as expected. Different portals seem to offer similar services, the requirements aren’t always clear, and you’re left wondering whether the documents you’ve uploaded are correct or if a small mistake could delay your application.
That was me, eighteen months ago.
Then I found out there were hidden fees that only appear at checkout. An Instagram agent with a “guaranteed approval” banner who disappeared after payment. And the terrifying fine print that your visa validity and your permitted stay are not the same number, something nobody in the booking confirmation email bothered to mention.

At VisaTop, we have processed hundreds of Dubai visit visa applications. We know exactly which confirmation screens glitch, which document uploads fail the first scan, and which portal you should never use for a hotel-sponsored trip. This guide is built from that experience. You will get a transparent cost table using real 2026 prices, a clear decision path to the right portal, and a decoded map of the status messages that official sites leave unexplained.
Read this before you pay anything to anyone.
Answer these three questions and you will know exactly which visa type and which channel applies to you.
Some nationalities receive visa-free entry to the UAE. Others get a visa on arrival at DXB without any pre-arranged application. A third group must arrange a visa before traveling. If you are unsure which category your passport falls into, check the ICP portal at icp.gov.ae before reading further. Visa on arrival is not the same as a pre-arranged Dubai visit visa and does not require an ICP or GDRFA application.
Tourism or leisure: you need a tourist visit visa. Visiting a relative or friend based in Dubai: you need a family or friend visit visa with a UAE-resident sponsor. Business meetings with a UAE-registered company: you need a multiple-entry business visit visa. Connecting flight with a short Dubai stopover: you need a transit visa of 48 or 96 hours.
Self-sponsored through a hotel package: go to the hotel-sponsored tourist visa route via GDRFA. A Dubai-based relative who is a UAE resident: go to the family visit visa route via ICP or GDRFA depending on their emirate. A UAE-registered company inviting you for business: go to the business visit visa route. An airline like Emirates or flydubai: go to the airline visa service. No sponsor: you may still qualify for a self-sponsored tourist visa through VisaTop.
Your path based on these answers:
The two most common options are the 30-day single-entry and the 60-day single-entry tourist visa. Both are available to most nationalities that require a pre-arranged visa. The 30-day option is the right choice for a standard holiday. The 60-day option is better if you are combining tourism with family visits or need flexibility in your travel dates.
A 14-day single-entry option also exists for short trips. It is the lowest cost option but gives you very little buffer if your plans change.
The VisaTop Team: “Do not confuse visa validity with stay duration. A 60-day validity visa does not mean you can stay for 60 days from the date you enter. It means the visa must be used within 60 days of issue. If you enter on day 58, you have two days of legal stay remaining, not 60. We see this mistake repeatedly and it results in overstay fines that could have been completely avoided.”
The 30-day multiple-entry and 60-day multiple-entry visas allow you to enter and exit the UAE more than once within the validity window. These are better suited to frequent business travelers, people splitting a trip between Dubai and another country, or visitors who want the flexibility of leaving and returning.
Each entry is counted separately. Your stay per entry is governed by the visa conditions, not by the total validity window.
The 48-hour transit visa covers a short Dubai layover. The 96-hour option gives you four days to explore the city during a longer connection. Both require a confirmed onward ticket to a third destination. You cannot apply for a transit visa if Dubai is your final destination.
Citizens of GCC countries, the UK, the US, most EU nations, Australia, Canada, and several other countries do not need a pre-arranged visa. They either enter visa-free or receive a visa on arrival at DXB at no prior cost. If your passport falls into this category, you do not need to use any portal or pay any fee before traveling. Confirm this directly on icp.gov.ae using your passport nationality.
| Channel | Best For | Typical Processing Time | Key Pros | Key Cons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VisaTop | All visit visa types, first-timers, complex cases, family sponsorship | 1 to 3 working days | Human review, error catching, full support from document check to approval | Service fee applies |
| ICP Smart Services | Federal sponsors, applications outside Dubai emirate | 3 to 5 working days | Official federal portal, handles most visa types | Confusing jurisdiction split, frequent technical glitches |
| GDRFA Dubai portal or app | Dubai-sponsored applications specifically | 2 to 5 working days | Dubai-optimized interface, clearer status tracking | Only for Dubai-sponsored applications, separate account needed |
| Emirates or flydubai visa service | Passengers booking with those airlines | 3 to 7 working days | Bundled with flight booking, minimal paperwork | Higher service fees, limited flexibility for changes |
| Authorized typing centers (Amer247) | Urgent applications, complex family cases | 1 to 3 working days | Human review of documents, error catching, faster submission | Additional fees, physical visit may be required |
| Hotel or tourism package sponsor | Package tourists with pre-arranged stays | 2 to 5 working days | Hotel handles sponsorship, minimal applicant paperwork | Restricted to hotel stay period, less control over timeline |
I once spent four hours and two hundred dirhams filling in a federal ICP application for a trip that was sponsored by a Dubai hotel. ICP processes federal-level applications. GDRFA Dubai processes Dubai emirate-level applications. They are separate systems. They do not share data in real time. When I submitted through ICP for a Dubai hotel-sponsored visa, the application sat in the wrong jurisdiction and I had to start again.
The rule is simple. If your sponsor, hotel, employer, or relative is based in Dubai, use the GDRFA portal at gdrfad.gov.ae. If your sponsor is based in any other emirate, use the ICP portal at icp.gov.ae. Check the URL before you create an account or enter any data.

VisaTop Consultants: “Apply directly through official ICP or GDRFA portals, or through a verified service like VisaTop, rather than through social media agents. Red flags include anyone offering guaranteed approval, requesting upfront cash transfers to a personal account, or refusing to provide an application reference number after payment. These are scam signals. We have helped clients recover from these situations. It is always more expensive to fix than to avoid.”
The government fee listed on any portal is not the number that leaves your bank account. Insurance, service fees, and in some cases refundable deposits stack on top before you see the confirmation screen.
At VisaTop, our prices are transparent. Here is exactly what you pay.
| Visa Type | VisaTop Price |
|---|---|
| 14 Days, Single Entry | $159.00 |
| 30 Days, Single Entry | $169.00 |
| 30 Days, Single Entry (Child) | $250.00 |
| 30 Days, Multiple Entry | $299.00 |
| 60 Days, Single Entry | $329.00 |
| 60 Days, Single Entry (Child) | $325.00 |
| 60 Days, Multiple Entry | $419.00 |
| Transit, 48 Hours | $100.00 |
| Transit, 96 Hours | $139.00 |
These prices include the government base fee, mandatory travel medical insurance from a UAE-recognized provider, and VisaTop’s service fee. There are no surprise charges at checkout.
If you apply directly through the ICP or GDRFA portal without support, the government base fee is real but incomplete. You will still need to purchase mandatory travel medical insurance separately from a UAE-recognized provider. Random policies from international aggregators are rejected at the payment stage because they are not on the approved insurer list. You may also need a typing center service fee if documents need professional preparation. Courier fees apply in some cases where a physical visa stamp is required.
VisaTop Advisors: “If you are booking flights before visa approval, choose fully refundable fares or fare hold options. Processing can take longer than expected, particularly during December and January peak periods when portal volumes increase sharply. A non-refundable flight booked on day one of a five-day processing window is a risk that costs more than the difference between a flexible and a fixed fare.”
Some family visit visa categories require the sponsor to lodge a refundable security deposit of AED 1,000 to AED 3,000. This is returned after the visitor exits the UAE within the permitted stay period. The refund is processed through the same portal channel used to apply. It is not automatic. The sponsor must confirm the exit and submit the refund request.
Your passport must be valid for a minimum of six months from your intended date of entry. It must have at least two consecutive blank pages for stamps. The scan you upload must be high-resolution, fully visible, with no cropped corners, no shadows, and no blurred edges.
VisaTop Consultants: “Blurred edges and cropped passport corners are among the top three reasons for automatic rejection before a human reviewer ever sees the file. Use a mobile scanner app to pre-check image quality before uploading. We recommend scanning on a white flat surface under good lighting. A photo taken on a phone camera at an angle in poor light will fail.”
Your photograph must meet UAE immigration specifications: white background, full face visible, no glasses, no head coverings except for religious reasons, recent photo.
Passport copy meeting the scan requirements above. Passport-size photograph to specification. Proof of accommodation such as a confirmed hotel booking or a host’s address in Dubai. Return flight booking confirmation or onward travel details.
All tourist visa documents plus the sponsor’s Emirates ID copy, the sponsor’s valid UAE residence visa copy, proof of relationship such as an attested marriage certificate or birth certificate, the sponsor’s proof of address in the UAE such as a tenancy contract registered on Ejari, a salary certificate showing the sponsor meets the minimum income threshold, and the sponsor’s most recent utility bill.
VisaTop Consultants: “For family visit visas, prepare attested relationship documents well in advance. Attestation means notarized in your home country, then verified by the UAE embassy in your country, then attested by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This process takes two to six weeks depending on the country. Starting it after you decide to travel is the most common planning failure we see.”
One common misconception: owning property in Dubai does not automatically grant the right to sponsor a visitor. Property ownership gives you certain residency and investment rights, but sponsoring a family visitor on a visit visa requires an active UAE residency permit, not a property title deed.
Passport copy and photograph. Invitation letter from the UAE-registered company on their official letterhead with trade license number. Copy of the inviting company’s valid trade license. Your business card or professional credentials.
Before you create an account on any portal, confirm the URL in your browser. The ICP portal is at smartservices.icp.gov.ae. The GDRFA portal is at smart.gdrfad.gov.ae. These are different domains, different account systems, and different application databases.
Creating an ICP account does not give you a GDRFA account. The two do not sync. Applying on the wrong portal does not transfer your application to the right one. You will need to start over.
If you use VisaTop, you avoid this entirely. We identify the correct channel for your specific application before you pay anything.
Your name on the application form must match your passport exactly. Not your preferred name. Not a shortened version. The name as it appears on the passport biographical page, including middle names if present, in exactly the same spelling.
The fields that most commonly confuse first-time applicants are the visa type dropdown, which uses classification codes that do not always match the plain-language description; the entry type field, where single-entry and multiple-entry are easy to select incorrectly; and the sponsor type field, where selecting the wrong sponsor category routes your application to the wrong review queue.
A returned application for these errors is labeled Returned for Modification in the portal. You have a window, typically 30 days, to fix and resubmit. If you miss that window, the application is automatically cancelled and you lose the fee.
The portal runs an automated scan on uploaded documents before a human reviewer sees them. Passports with blurred edges, photos with colored backgrounds, or documents where the text is not fully readable fail this automated check immediately.
Test your scan before uploading. If you can read every field on the biographical page clearly, the scan will likely pass. If any corner is cut off or any text is unclear, rescan before submitting.
Pay only through the official portal payment gateway. Do not pay through WhatsApp links, bank transfers to individuals, or third-party payment pages that are not part of the official portal flow.
After payment, the confirmation screen shows your application reference number. Save it immediately. Screenshot it. The SMS confirmation from the portal can be delayed by hours or filtered into spam. The reference number is the only thing that lets you track your application, contact support, or escalate if something goes wrong.
If the confirmation screen hangs, times out, or shows a blank page after you click pay, do not pay again. Check your bank statement first. If the charge has processed, the application has likely been received even though the screen did not load. Contact VisaTop or the relevant portal’s support line with your passport number to confirm before submitting a second payment.
Standard processing through VisaTop takes one to three working days. ICP direct applications take three to five working days under normal conditions. GDRFA takes two to five working days. During December and January, add two to three working days to any estimate.
No notification during this window does not mean something is wrong. The portals do not send progress updates during review. You will receive a notification when a decision is made, either approval, rejection, or a request for additional documents.
Do not contact support every 24 hours asking for an update. It does not speed the process and creates a secondary flag on your file in some cases.
Your application reference number is on the confirmation screen after payment and in the confirmation email from the portal. The format differs between portals. ICP reference numbers begin with a different prefix than GDRFA numbers. Do not try to check a GDRFA application number on the ICP portal. It will return a not found result that looks like a rejection but is simply a cross-portal search error.
VisaTop Expert Opinion: “Check your visa status using your application number on the same portal you applied through. ICP and GDRFA systems do not sync in real time. Checking the wrong portal and seeing nothing does not mean your application is rejected. It means you are looking in the wrong database. This specific confusion causes unnecessary panic and sometimes triggers a second application that creates a duplicate payment problem.”
Submitted: Your application has been received and is in the queue for review.
Under Review: A human reviewer is looking at your file. Do not contact support at this stage unless the status has not changed after double the expected processing time.
Returned for Modification: Something in your application needs to be corrected. Check the portal for the specific reason. Fix it and resubmit within the stated window. Missing this window cancels the application.
Approved: Your visa has been issued. Download the approved visa from the portal immediately. Do not rely on the email delivery alone.
Rejected: Your application has been denied. See Section 9 for the exact response protocol.
GDRFA’s notifications are typically faster and more specific than ICP’s. The DubaiNow app provides real-time push notifications when your status changes. This is the most reliable way to monitor a GDRFA application without repeatedly refreshing the web portal.
Wait the full published processing time before contacting support. Contact support if the status has not changed after double the expected processing time. Escalate to a physical Amer center visit if portal support is unresponsive after 48 hours of follow-up. VisaTop clients have a direct support channel that bypasses the general portal queue for follow-up cases.
Your permitted stay begins on the date you enter the UAE, not the date the visa was issued. The validity window is the period within which you must make your first entry. The stay duration is the number of days you are permitted to remain after entry.
Enter on day one of a 30-day validity visa and you have the full stay duration available. Enter on day 28 of a 30-day validity visa and you have two days of legal stay remaining regardless of the stay duration printed on the visa.
Since December 2025, you can apply for up to two 30-day extensions online through the ICP portal without leaving the UAE. Each extension costs a minimum AED 600 in government fees plus any service charge. You must apply before your current visa expires. If the visa expires before your extension application is approved, overstay fines begin automatically.
This replaces the old visa run to Oman or Bahrain that many visitors used to reset their stay. The visa run is still technically allowed but is no longer necessary for most standard cases.
Overstay fines are AED 50 per day from the first day of violation. They compound daily. There is no informal grace period. The fine is recorded on your ICP or GDRFA file and must be paid before you can exit the country or make any future visa application.
An entry ban can be added to your record for serious overstay violations. A previous overstay on your file increases the rejection probability on future applications, including from entirely different countries where the UAE has data-sharing protocols.
VisaTop UAE Consultants Tips: “Family visit visa holders with elderly parents or children sometimes assume a leniency applies if the overstay was short or unintentional. There is no automatic leniency in the UAE immigration system. The AED 50 per day fine applies from day one regardless of the reason. Apply for an extension before the visa expires, not after. We manage extension applications for VisaTop clients as part of our ongoing support.”
A rejection on your file is visible in the ICP and GDRFA system. Reapplying immediately with the same documents and the same errors creates a second rejection record, which increases the probability that a third application will also be rejected. Stop. Diagnose before you spend another application fee.
The rejection notification in the portal will reference a reason code. Common reasons include: passport scan failed the automated quality check, name on the application does not match the passport, insufficient blank pages in the passport, the sponsor does not meet the income threshold for family visit visas, or the document set is incomplete.
Some rejection reasons are fixable in a straightforward reapplication. A passport scan issue is fixed by rescanning. A name mismatch is fixed by correcting the form. These can be resolved in a new application submitted the following day.
Other rejection reasons require more careful handling. If a sponsor’s income does not meet the threshold, a new application with the same sponsor will produce the same result. The fix requires either a different sponsor, a different visa category, or waiting until the sponsor’s income situation changes.
If the rejection reason is not clear from the portal notification, bring your passport, the rejection reference number, and the complete document set to a VisaTop consultant or an authorized Amer center. A trained reviewer can identify errors that the portal notification does not explain clearly, particularly in cases where the automated scan rejected a document for a technical reason that is not visible to the applicant.
VisaTop handles rejection recovery as a separate service from the initial application. We review the rejection reason, advise on the correct fix, and resubmit with the corrected documentation.
Before you click pay on any application, confirm the following:
Passport valid for at least six months from intended entry date. Two consecutive blank pages confirmed. All name fields on the application match the passport biographical page exactly. Passport scan is high-resolution, fully visible, no cropped corners, no blurred edges. Photograph meets UAE immigration specifications: white background, full face, no glasses. Proof of accommodation is confirmed and dated. Travel medical insurance is from a UAE-recognized provider. Application is submitted through the correct portal for your sponsor’s emirate. You have the application reference number saved before closing the browser.
VisaTop Consultants: “Immigration rules change. This guide reflects verified requirements as of June 2026 against ICP Smart Services and GDRFA official portals. Check icp.gov.ae and gdrfad.gov.ae directly before submitting any application to confirm that conditions have not changed since publication. If you are applying for a family member, a complex sponsored visit, or a multiple-entry visa, contact VisaTop before submitting. A single document error costs more to fix than it costs to prevent.”
Download your approved visa from the portal as soon as the approval notification arrives. Do not rely on email delivery. Print a copy to carry with your passport. Confirm your travel insurance is active and covers the dates of your visit. Verify your sponsor’s contact details are current if your visa requires sponsor confirmation at the border. Recheck your passport has six months validity and two blank pages on the day you pack.
The ICP and GDRFA portals are official and they work. They also glitch, produce blank confirmation screens, send delayed SMS notifications, and reject document scans for reasons they do not explain clearly to the applicant.

VisaTop’s process includes a pre-submission document review that catches the errors the portal’s automated scanner would have rejected. It includes real-time status monitoring so you are not refreshing a portal every four hours. It includes direct support when something goes wrong instead of a customer service queue with a 48-hour response window. And it includes post-approval guidance so you know exactly what to print, carry, and confirm before you board.
