What exactly is a UAE visit visa?
A visit visa is an electronic entry permit. It lets a foreign national enter the UAE for tourism, a family visit, a business meeting, transit, or a short-term purpose such as medical treatment or looking for work. It is not a stamp you collect in advance. You receive a PDF, which you print and carry with your passport.
Most nationalities need a pre-arranged visa. Citizens of certain countries can enter visa-free or get a visa on arrival, which is covered further down. Rules and procedures come from the UAE government portal (u.ae), the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA).
Why do visa validity and stay duration get mixed up?
Every e-visa carries two different dates, and confusing them is one of the most common ways travelers overstay by accident.
Visa validity is the window in which you must enter the UAE, for example 60 days from the issue date. Miss it and the visa expires unused.
Stay duration is the maximum number of days you can remain in the country, counted from the day you enter, for example 30, 60, or 90 days.
As soon as the visa arrives, put the “enter before” date and the “last day to leave” date in your calendar. Overstay fines are charged per day and climb quickly.
What changed in the September 2025 policy overhaul?
In September 2025 the ICP announced four new visit visa categories and revised the durations and conditions of several existing visas. The new categories target talent, medical tourists, and short-term business visitors, in line with the UAE’s wider economic goals. A few details matter when you choose. With the multiple-entry 30-day visa you can come and go during the validity period, but no single stay can exceed 30 days. A dedicated child rate exists for applicants under 18 on the 30-day and 60-day visas. If you will stay between 31 and 60 days, pick the 60-day visa from the start instead of trying to stretch a 30-day visa with an extension, which may be refused.
The 90-day visa is often used by people who later plan to move to a residence visa. One example: a retiree who wants three months with her son in Dubai applies for a 90-day single-entry visa through the ICP app, uploads her son’s tenancy contract as proof of accommodation, and is approved in four working days.
When is the 96-hour transit visa the right choice?
The transit visa suits travelers with a layover who want to leave the airport and see the city. You need a confirmed onward flight within 96 hours of entry. The visa is usually sponsored by the airline you fly with, such as Emirates, Etihad, Flydubai, or Air Arabia, and not every nationality is eligible, so check with your airline. Booking the transit visa at the same time as the ticket is the simplest route, and airlines often bundle the hotel and visa together.
What are the four new 2025 visit visa categories?
Job-seeker visa. A single-entry stay of 60 or 90 days to look for work. You may need to show qualifications, a CV, and sometimes a letter of intent. It does not allow you to work. Once you find a job, you need a proper employment visa.
Medical treatment visa. Typically 60 or 90 days, depending on the treatment plan, for patients and accompanying family. A letter from a UAE-licensed healthcare facility confirming the appointment or plan is mandatory. The hospital or a medical tourism facilitator can sponsor it.
Study or training visa. Up to 60 or 90 days for short courses, workshops, conferences, or training. An official invitation or enrollment letter from a UAE-based institution is required.
Temporary work mission visa. Usually 30 to 90 days, single entry, for a short-term project or assignment. The inviting UAE company must provide a letter describing the mission and its duration. It does not replace a full employment visa.

Which documents does every visit visa application need?
A passport valid for at least six months from your intended entry date. This is non-negotiable.
A recent passport-size photo with a white background, as a digital copy for online applications.
A confirmed return or onward flight booking.
Proof of accommodation: a hotel reservation, a host’s tenancy contract, or an invitation letter from a UAE resident.
In some cases, a bank statement or other proof of sufficient funds, especially for longer stays or the job-seeker visa.
Immigration officers may also ask to see your return ticket and proof of funds on arrival, so carry printed copies. Blurry uploads are a top reason for rejection. Scan clearly and name files logically, for example “Passport_Ahmed.pdf”.
Do you need a sponsor, or can you sponsor yourself?
Traditionally a visit visa needed a sponsor: a UAE resident, a hotel, a travel agency, or an airline. Today many tourists apply directly through the ICP Smart Services app or the GDRFA Dubai website and effectively act as their own sponsor. The ICP app covers all emirates and works in English and Arabic, with real-time tracking. Some categories still need a specific sponsor, such as a hospital for medical treatment, and a transit visa must be sponsored by the airline. Which nationalities can skip the pre-arranged visa?
Citizens of more than 70 countries can enter visa-free or get a visa on arrival, including most EU nations, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, and Japan. Visa-on-arrival stays range from 30 to 90 days depending on the country. Verify your eligibility on the official UAE government portal before you apply, because you might not need a visa at all. Can a visit visa be extended from inside the UAE?
Most 30-day and 60-day tourist visas can be extended for an additional 30 days without leaving the country. Apply before the current visa expires, ideally three to five days early, because processing can take two to three working days. Extensions are not guaranteed. Some visa types offer a 10-day grace period after expiry, but this is not universal. The UAE periodically announces amnesty schemes that waive overstay fines.
