A Dubai visa extension lets you stay longer on your current tourist or visit visa without flying out and coming back. Since December 2025 the whole process runs online, and the exit-and-re-enter “visa run” is no longer needed for short-term visas. The catch is timing. Fines start the day after your visa expires, so the extension has to be approved before then. This guide explains who can extend, where to apply, how long you can stay in total, and what slows an application down.
Is an extension the same as a renewal, a cancellation, or a status change?
No. The four terms are often used interchangeably, but each follows its own rules and authority.
Extension: lengthening an existing visa before it expires. It is common for tourist and visit visas.
Renewal: getting a new visa of the same type after the original ends. It is mostly used for residency visas.
Cancellation: officially ending a visa when you leave the UAE or change status. The sponsor usually does this through GDRFA or ICP.
Status change: converting one visa type to another inside the UAE, for example a visit visa to a residence visa, without exiting.

Who can extend a Dubai tourist or visit visa?
Tourists holding a 30-day or 60-day visa, single or multiple entry, can often extend. The same applies to a visa on arrival. Once approved, the same e-visa is re-validated, and no new entry stamp is needed. Certain other short-term visas follow a similar procedure through GDRFA, including medical treatment visas, business visas, and job-search visas. In rare cases, nationals of some countries, such as Indians holding certain foreign visas, may get extra short extensions.
Where do you submit the extension request?
It depends on how the visa was issued. Dubai-issued tourist and visit visas are handled by GDRFA Dubai, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs. You can apply through Amer centers or the GDRFA smart app. Federal visas, such as those issued for Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, go through the ICP smart portal. Using the online portal is the fastest route in both cases.
How long can you stay once extensions are added?
Each extension typically adds the original visa length. The combined stay, original visa plus extensions, cannot exceed 120 days.

How quickly is an extension approved?
Extension applications are usually completed within 48 hours. Submit at least a few days before expiry anyway, because approval is not automatic and any document problem eats into that margin. Make sure your passport scan and photo are correct before you file, and check online that nothing is outstanding: our Visa Fine Check tool can alert you to fines that would block the application.
What most often delays a Dubai visa extension?
Incomplete documents. An unreadable passport copy or a wrong photo size stops processing.
High volume. Summer holidays, New Year, and amnesty periods flood the system, so allow extra days.
Unpaid fines. Outstanding fines block visa services in Dubai. Clear them first with the Visa Fine Check tool or the Dubai Police website.
Applying after expiry. Dubai abolished the 10-day grace period in December 2025. A late request means fines and possibly a service surcharge.
System or typing errors. Ask your typing center or agent for proof of submission, and escalate if nothing moves.
Weekend timing. GDRFA is closed on Fridays, so do not leave it until Thursday afternoon.
If you see no progress after three to five business days, call GDRFA (600-568-833 or 600-400-444) or your typing center. Customer Happiness Centers and the ICP helpline can also escalate a stuck file.
What happens if your visa expires before the extension?
Waiting too long leads to overstay fines, charged per day from the first day after expiry. Tourist visas do not carry the long grace period that residency visas have. You must exit or hold an approved extension. Unresolved overstays can also complicate future applications, so settle everything before you leave.
Can you switch from a visit visa to residency instead of extending?
Yes, if you have a sponsor such as a new employer or a family member. Once the new entry permit is approved, the sponsor or a typing center files a status adjustment with GDRFA or ICP. The change usually takes one to two working days after approval, and you never leave the country. How is a visit visa cancelled if you leave early?
The sponsor cancels it online. That can be the hotel, the tour agency, or the relative who applied. Processing takes about 48 hours. There is no post-cancellation grace period for a visit visa, so exit promptly. Always keep the cancellation certificate from GDRFA as proof of legal exit. Residency cancellations follow a separate process with their own 60-day grace period.
